We often hear others talk of those who experience traumatic events as having “out of body experiences’. These experiences can actually be Dissociative Disorders. These disorders involve a disruption in the connection s between consciousness, memory, identity,emotion, perception, motor control and behavior as noted in DSMV.These diosrders are often found associated with trauma such as child abuse. Individuals may report that they are observers of their own speech and actions. It as though an individual loses one’s sense of self.This author has found disorders of identity and detachment in cases of individuals exposed to trauma.The mind copes with pain and overwhelming experiences by disconnecting from memories of the traumatic event.Onset of the disorder in a great proportion of people is prior to age 25.Therapy to create support, insight and education into coping with trauma is huge. It is important to assist the patient in draining off the adverse emotional charge of traumatic events and moving towards a healthy, adaptive lifestyle. Hypnotherapy and guided imagery can dilute and significantly lessen the emotional charge of traumatic events.It also can assist the patient in taking charge of their lives.The idea is to not prolong the period wherein one suppresses memory of the traumatic event but actively works to power through a painful period of one’s life! With proper psychological intervention and support, you can move towards successfully closing a painful life chapter. The time and effort are worth it…YOU are worth it!,,, Fight ON!!!
