In my practice, I have seen many victims of domestic violence (DV). I am amazed at the fact that many do not know about resources available to them. There are DV support groups, community housing with work-school programs, grants and scholarships, counseling resources. I have found that the survivor defines their future and their options…..victims (our hearts go out to them) are defined by the DV event…a belief in fate rather than self-determination and refusal to take “NO” for an answer and to STAND STRONG! Human beings have a tremendous capacity to be resilient when placed in nurturing, loving environments. They can and DO change. Patients focus on goals and lean on their faith. DV situations predispose people to think little of themselves because they are belittled by their partner. Seeking rewarding career paths, setting limits with others (I forgive you but I really need to be safe and to keep my distance), obtaining a psychological assessment to yield their potentials and obtain guidance for life is huge. Go for it….Do NOT ask..”WHY me?…” DO say “FIGHT ON!!!!!!”
