Jonathan Martin strikes a chord in all of us who have been bullied, intimidated or threatened. At the very least, we are all entitled to work in peace and to be free from a hostile work environment. It is amazing that NFL personnel people reportedly stated that Jonathan needed to “stand up for himself.” The fact that he was the alleged victim of racial taunts and was threatened is outrageous, especially in light of others on the team who were reportedly being silent about this. The Patriots are said to have had Incognito on the DNDC list..viz, “do not draft due to character issues.” All of this echoes the pain caused to all when individuals are targeted, harassed, and intimidated. Jonathan should be commended for walking away from the situation, but at the cost of his career. This will have to be addressed by the Dolphins. Derogatory slurs on people’s ancestry and against people of color is crossing the line. They need to be supported, not criticized, for not “standing up for themselves.” People of authority should have stood by Jonathan…perhaps, then, we would not even be discussing this issue!
